How to Leave a Legacy

How to Leave a Legacy

Making a planned gift or a bequest to WHBW ensures support for future survivors of domestic violence. Planned gifts such as charitable annuities and charitable trusts provide income and tax benefits to donors. Our staff would be happy to have a personalized, confidential gift example prepared for you. Bequests enable a donor to make a significant gift that might otherwise not be possible. A bequest may leave to WHBW a specific cash amount or property, or it may reserve for WHBW a certain percentage of the property remaining after provisions for family members and other beneficiaries. In addition to cash and securities, bequests to WHBW may include life insurance, real estate, works of art, IRA accounts, etc. To make a bequest through your Will (particularly in the case of life insurance or IRA accounts), we suggest consulting with your attorney. You should describe the item and state your intention to give that particular item to Women Helping Battered Women. Here are two samples of such a bequest:

"I give, devise and bequeath $________ (state sum of money or otherwise describe security or property) to Women Helping Battered Women, to be used for its general purposes."

"I give, bequeath, and devise (all or ___ percent of) the rest, residue and remainder of the property, both real and personal, wherever situated, which I may own or be entitled to at my death, to Women Helping Battered Women, to be used for its general purposes."

Note: Your personal financial situation is unique. You should discuss your estate plans with your family and your financial and legal advisors before making any charitable gift.
